John Napier, born 1550, died 1617, was a Scottish mathematician , among a lot of other things. He is mainly known for the invention of logarithms, which he published about 1614. He also invented a system of numbered ivory rods used for computation known as ìNapierís bonesî along with several other schemes for easing computation in the era before computers (or even calculators).
Hopefully, Napier (the software) will also ease computation - although, unfortunately, not as significantly as Napier (the mathematician) did.
